An African dream becomes reality!

I am about to set off on my long anticipated adventure through Africa into Europe in my Land Rover Defender named 'Anse' (after my late great grand aunt Anneliese who herself was an intrepid traveller who got never tired of taking my brother and me to interesting places in my home country). My permanent travel mates will be Zimbi the zebra, Harry the hippo and Bug my travel-bug (who will hopefully never leave me ;-)

The plan is to go from Cape Town through Zimbabwe, Mozambique along the eastern shores of Lake Niassa, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey into Europe to my home town Lemgo in Germany within the next 6 months. If all goes well, I will be returning on the western coast of Africa through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Angola and Namibia back to Cape Town.

I will be travelling on my own and am encouraging any of my friends to join me for parts of this journey! I do not mind diverting from my route to pick up/drop off a travel mate from the airport, so if you are keen on remote places away from the crowds, if you love nature, wildlife, exploring new cultures and can appreciate the simple things in life, get in contact with me!

If you'd like to get an idea what traveling like this is about, please check this site
http://www.adventureandrew.com/ I am planning on going up a similar route. Please also check my precious friends Kevin and Philippa's website http://www.oxbowepic.com/ They have been a big inspiration for this trip and I will be meeting them somewhere up there. They are currently in Uganda.

The easiest way to communicate with me will be via sms (texting for my american friends ;-). I will be updating my blog as often as I can and post my new cell phone as soon as I enter a new country.

For those interested, my first travel companion who hopped on at the last minute is my friend Kirsty who will be joining me from Joburg onwards for the next 2 months or so. Nobody else on the waiting list so far...

Okay, that's it for my first post, I better start packing my Anse!
